The European Security and Defence College (ESDC) had the honour of co-organising, together with the French Institute for Higher National Defence Studies (IHEDN), the “Challenges of Space for the EU and CSDP” course.
The course took pace in Paris between 06 and 08 February 2024 with active participation and excellent outcomes. The aim of the course was to raise awareness of the importance of space activities in the framework of the Common Security and Defence Policy of the European Union.
The first day of the course focused on a general overview of the European Union’s space strategy, the challenges to space security and the role of the Satellite Centre as a success story for the EU strategic autonomy in space.
The second day of the course dealt with partnership and cooperation. Specific emphasis was placed on EU space policy and its initiatives and actors, on national space policies in Europe and their specific characteristics and on the international dimension of cooperation in space security and EU space surveillance, traffic management and protection of critical infrastructures.
The last day reviewed EU investments in space innovation and research, and the European space industry.
We would like to thank all the keynote speakers for their excellent contributions and input, and the very high quality of their speeches and lectures.
We would also like to thank all 18 participants for their confidence in the ESDC. We will do our utmost to continue providing high quality training.
