Cultural Property Protection Course, Krems, 23-27 September 2024
‘Imagine, for a moment, the cultural landscape of your homeland and thus your roots disappear from one day to the next – all the peculiarities and little things that make up your identity, your family, your village, your city, your country, and thus your life…’
This statement, made by the organisers at the opening of the course on cultural property protection, clearly explains how important it is to raise awareness of the need for cultural property and heritage to be protected as part of the EU’s work.
With this is mind, the Centre for Cultural Property Protection at the Danube University Krems and the Office of Cultural Affairs of the Principality of Liechtenstein organised the second iteration of the Cultural Property Protection Course, under the auspices of the European Security and Defence College (ESDC). The course, which took place on 23-27 September 2024 on the premises of the Danube University Krems, was a great success.
The programme was carefully designed to cater to the participants’ needs and interests, establishing the basis for an integrated and holistic approach to the protection of cultural property during crises and in peacetime, based on good practices. The joint efforts of the Danube University Krems, the Office of Cultural Affairs of the Principality of Liechtenstein and the ESDC made for five days of in-depth learning and constructive exchange for the 18 participants with military, police, civilian and diplomatic backgrounds from seven EU Member States and a number of CSDP missions.
During the week, course participants had the privilege of listening to lectures delivered by top-level professors, experts and practitioners, who covered a variety of relevant topics.
The highlight of the course was the exercise based on a case study designed by the Centre for Cultural Property Protection, in which the participants had the chance to put into practice what they had learned during the theoretical part of the course.
We would like to thank all the speakers for their involvement, all the participants for their active contributions, and the course director Dr Anna Maria Kaiser and her team for their very constructive cooperation.
