Course on Mediation, Negotiation and Dialogue Skills for CDSP,Rome, 07-11 November 2022
The five-day course ‘Mediation, Negotiation and Dialogue Skills for CDSP’ started on 7 November and ended on the 11 November 2022. It was co-organised by the Centre of Higher Defence Studies and the Ecole Universitaire Internationale, under the aegis of the European Security and Defence College (ESDC). It was held in Rome in the premises of the CASD.
29 participants from EU Member States, third countries and EU institutions, with a variety of diplomatic, military, police and civilian backgrounds, took part in the course.
The course consisted of presentations delivered by experts from all over Europe as well as group sessions and exercises that were particularly appreciated by course members. These sessions allowed participants to explore the mediation, negotiation and dialogue skills that are part and parcel of the professional and personal lives of people working in the field of CSDP.
Due to the complexity of current CSDP operations, there is an increasing awareness of the need for both military and civilian personnel to be equipped with techniques and skills that allow them to negotiate themselves, and then use the mediation process – which includes further negotiation – to help others prevent, manage and resolve conflicts.
The practical part of the course (simulations and role-play exercises) enabled the participants to put into practice what they had learned and apply it in a relevant international peace-building scenario.
We would like take this opportunity to thank the training providers, the CASD and the Ecole Universitaire Internationale, for their outstanding work in running the course; the course participants for their willingness to learn; and the speakers, mentors and facilitators for their valuable contribution and excellent advice throughout the course.
