The European Security and Defence College (ESDC) had the privilege of co-organizing, alongside the Italian Centre for Higher Defence Studies (CASD), the course titled “Challenges of Space for the EU and CSDP”. This course took place successfully in Rome, Italy, from 21 to 24 October 2024, with the objective of enhancing awareness around the significance of space activities within the framework of the European Union’s Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP).
Following the opening remarks by Col. Giuseppe Calandrini, the Course Director, Ambassador Marjolijn Van Deelen, Special Envoy for Space and Head of the EEAS SECDEFPOL 5 – Space, delivered a keynote address on the EU space strategy.
The second day centered on the geopolitics of space and the EU’s space strategy for security and defense, and included an insightful field visit to the Italian System for Secure Communications and Alerts (SICRAL).
On the third day, participants explored the role and functions of the EU Satellite Centre, examined the challenges to space security, and discussed the EU’s space policy initiatives, space surveillance and tracking, and civil protection.
The course concluded on the fourth day with sessions on national space structures and their specific roles, as well as the EU’s approach to addressing space-related threats.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the speakers for their invaluable contributions and exceptional presentations. We are also grateful to the 24 participants for their trust in the ESDC, and we remain committed to delivering high-quality training in the future.
