Pre-deployment Training for CSDP Missions and Operations, Brussels, 12-16 June 2023
The Austrian Centre for Peace (ACP) and the European Security and Defence College (ESDC) co-organised another Pre-deployment Training for CSDP Missions and Operations. The course was held in Brussels from 12 to 16 June 2023. Twenty-one participants from nine different EU Member States and one candidate country took part in the 7th edition of this training event for the academic year 2023-2024.
Pre-deployment Training (PDT) plays a vital role in preparing personnel who are about to deploy to civilian and military CSDP missions and operations. The overall aim of the training is to ensure that the mission members are suitably prepared before deployment, and to help them integrate into mission life and be operational as soon as possible once in the field.
The June edition of this course featured a diverse group of participants, soon to take up a wide range of functions in nine of the CSDP missions and operations, both civilian and military. This diversity of expertise, coupled with various levels of previous mission experience, added to the dynamic atmosphere in which the group actively participated.
The course focused not only on the latest developments in European security and defence under the CFSP, but also on the roles of the EU institutions related to the CSDP, on the Strategic Compass and the current security challenges for EU as a major actor in foreign and security policy. Speakers also gave some useful practical information related to the framework of ‘Duty of Care’ for CDSP missions, the CSDP mission medical support system and the new Code of Conduct. The June PDT benefited especially from the excellent synergy between the participants and the speakers, who established valuable networks.
The ESDC would like to thank all speakers for their exceptional contributions and valuable suggestions, and all course participants for their active participation, positive attitude and commitment. We wish them a successful deployment in their respective missions. Special thanks go to APC’s course director Susanne Györög, for the excellent cooperation throughout all stages of the course implementation.
